Multitasking

The ability of a person to execute more than one job at a time is considered to be more time efficient. We all do it, whether we’re doing homework and listening to music while talking to our friends on AIM or watching TV while eating dinner. These often lead to worse habits such as texting or talking on the phone while driving (even if it is a bluetooth headset). For the most part, multitasking has actually been proven to result in a lower quality of the task being executed. Yet, we live in a society where multitasking is sometimes a requirement for certain jobs. Slowly, our culture is shifting from having dinner as family at the dinner table to heating up frozen pizza to eat in one’s room as he or she works on a project while talking to a friend.

I’m not entirely sure that we all know that multitasking has more negative effects than it does positive. In fact, I admit that I, too, am having trouble understanding the cons of multitasking. As I type this, there is music playing in the background, causing me tap my feet and bob my head to the beat. However, I do not feel that the music is having a negative effect on my writing (though I could be completely wrong).

Multitasking, I feel, is fairly modern concept that began to evolve with advent of recent technology and the fast-paced life that we quickly get acclimated to as we grow older. What do you think? Is multitasking a good thing or a bad thing?
