A Brief Lesson from Physics

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. That is the cliché we’ve seen time and again about  always keeping our sights on the goal and to never give up. However, we must also take into consideration Newton’s first law of physics and how it applies to our personalities and our characters as well.  The law states that an object at rest will stay at rest until and outside force acts upon it…and an object in movement will remain in movement until an outside force acts upon it. In regards to our personalities and our characters, the second part of the statement remains to be true, but I’d like to slightly alter the first part of the statement. An object at rest will remain at rest until an inside force acts upon itself. Although it’s not easy, it is up to us to be that inside force that will keep us from staying at rest.

Not to overdo the physics analogy, but Newton’s second law of physics mentions momentum, which also can be applied to our lives. It is obviously easier for one to continue in his or her path when  there is momentum to keep him or her going. We must strive to build momentum and then work just as hard to maintain that momentum so that no matter what type of situations arise, we would be able to continue in our path to success.

When I’m looking for ways to build and to maintain momentum, I feel that praying helps me a lot and helps to clear my mind of all worries so that I can think clearly. Also, I try to read motivational poems such as the one below.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will;
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill;
When the funds are low, and the debts are high;
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you can never tell how close you are;
It may be near when it seems afar.
So, stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit -
It’s when things go wrong that you mustn’t quit.
