As I make my way through college, I try to maintain the morals and ideals I have by infusing them into my words and actions. Especially after meeting people of varying ideologies, it is sometimes necessary for people to clearly define their own set of ideologies for themselves. However, this can prove to be problematic in certain situations. Depending on the situation, it seems as if the right thing to do is not necessarily the best thing to do, as the consequences of or reactions to these “right” actions could be totally different from what is expected.
If one is trying to follow the path of karma yoga, one would feel that if one is in a situation where one is able to help, one should help to the best of one’s ability. But sometimes, it is better if one does not try to help because one may not be qualified enough to help and may possibly make circumstances worse. This is a situation I have found myself in many a time during my first one-and-a-half semesters at college.
What I have learned from these experiences is that although one may have good intentions when offering to help others, sometimes it may be best to not offer help immediately, but to wait until one is asked for help. This way, there would be no confusion regarding one’s true intentions behind helping someone.
