A night vigil

I attended a night vigil today on the steps of Memorial Church, in memory of those affected during the recent Mumbai bombings.

Swami Vivekananda once wrote something that I find particularly relevant in the wake of disasters such as these, where the urge to take action often clouds my better judgment.

We should always try to help the world, that should be the highest motive in us; but if we consider well, we find that the world does not require our help at all.”

I’m really confused by this excerpt. Vivekananda was a huge proponent of taking matters in ones own hands. I think I need to know the context of this quote to better understand what he is trying to get at.
