Today’s bombings in Mumbai

The bombings and gunfire in Mumbai today (reuters, cnn) make me thankful for my comfortable, secure chair here at home.

Upon hearing the news, I felt two things:

  1. I am going to change this. Idealism swept through me for a few seconds, and subsided.
  2. What is wrong with our country? My family is from India, so this news of terrorism in the country — my country, though I am a citizen of the United States — makes me wonder what is wrong with the place.

The disgust in item (2) dissolved into the numb refrain of what should we do? What can we do? What can we do besides continue to live our lives?

I don’t have the answers to these questions.

I disagree that these attacks are a reflection upon India – India did nothing to provoke such a horrendous manslaughter of its people. Instead, the attack is yet another manifestation of Islam extremists’ hatred toward the West – the Mujadeen bombed areas with high concentrations of Americans and Europeans.

Though I do believe in Hinduism’s call for Ahimsa, reflection on the Bhagavad Gita and India’s history seems to assert that perhaps India’s 9/11 cannot be handled through peaceful means only.

Most importantly, however, I extend my deepest condolences all those affected by the attack.
