Hunting Christians in Orissa

The caption of the article summarizes the atrocity — “Rewards offered for murdering Christians, destroying homes, churches.” In reaction to the murder of a prominent Hindu leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, the Hindu extremists have just declared an ultimatum:

“This week, Hindu extremists said they have set a deadline for the capture of Saraswati’s murderers. If the killers are not caught by Dec. 15, they promised to begin a massacre [of Christians] on Dec. 25, Christmas day.”

Why is this happening? Why does any religious atrocity happen? I have no answers, no insights in this post, just confusion, sadness, and gratitude — deep gratitude — that I am here, safe and sound, with trivial worries such as problem sets and career options, instead of waking up in the morning, praying that I will live another day with my head still on my shoulders.

Articles like these are a sad reminder for me that there are extremists in every religion, thought they are usually discussed in the context of Islam and Christianity. Perhaps it’s the nature of religion itself that makes it impossible to eliminate extremist notions, but there must be some way to direct these Hindu’s frustrations towards a constructive end. Inter-religious workshops would be a place to start.
